We are a family business gone global. Chairman Gert Boyle's parents - German nationals who fled Germany in 1938 - purchased a small hat business upon their arrival in Portland and named it Columbia Hat Company, after the river that inspired their new home. This humble beginning was of huge significance to the family, marking newfound freedom and a fresh start. Gert’s husband later took over and, after he died in 1970, she began to run the show, going from housewife to executive overnight. Today, her son, Tim Boyle, is our CEO. The family - like our business - has experienced its ups and downs, but enjoying the outdoors together has always been an inseparable part of the program.

Columbia Sportswear Company’s headquarters is located in Portland, Oregon. Today, we have more than 8,000 employees based in 28 countries throughout the world. These employees work in our regional business offices, retail stores, distribution centers, and sales and sourcing offices around the globe.

Although the Bugaboo® Three-in-One jacket made us famous, we continue to surprise the world with new clothing, footwear and accessory innovations. Columbia’s merchandise appeals to a broad range of consumers of varying ages and income levels, from serious outdoors men and women to weekend sports enthusiasts.
